preparing for your tattoo

  • It’s an honor to receive clients traveling from all over the world! In order to make things as smooth as possible, here are some travel suggestions.

We value the time and energy it takes to visit, and we make every effort to uphold all appointments once they are in the schedule, but in rare moments, unavoidable life events can sometimes come up.

Please book refundable or changeable flights and lodging, in the event that an artist is sick or needs to reschedule.

Travel insurance can be another possible solution if you choose not to book flexible arrangements.

Do not book your flight on the same evening of your tattoo appointment.

If you are planning to drive home or take an interstate train/bus on the day of your tattoo, discuss expected appointment time with your artist in advance. It’s important to set aside enough design and stenciling time so that we can perfect your piece exactly for your body, and prepare for the event that breaks may be needed. For larger pieces, plan for your appointment to take up to 2-3 hours longer than the tattoo itself.

If you’d like recommendations for what else to do during your trip, reach out and we can forward our map of galleries, restaurants, and fun things to see in NYC and nearby!

  • The Week Before:

Stay hydrated, eat well, get lots of rest! Take care of yourself the week before getting a tattoo, the day of, and throughout the healing process.

Make sure you have checked in with your artist and given them any references prior to this, and look out for e-mails regarding mock-ups, drawings, or questions.

    The Night Before:

Get a good night’s sleep, and limit alcohol consumption. Avoid coming in hungover - it will hurt more during the process and won't heal as well afterward.

    The Day Of:

Make sure you eat a good breakfast/lunch, and bring some snacks. You’re always welcome to take a break to order a meal during long sessions, and we will have small snacks available for you as well!

Avoid alcohol and blood-thinning medications, and limit caffeine consumption.

Please make sure to bring your valid photo ID, and anything you’d like to help feel comfortable: a cozy blanket, a movie, etc.

  • All deposits are non-refundable.

With at least one month’s notice, you may reschedule to another date in the next round of booking (or be added to cancellation waitlist). An additional deposit will be requested to hold the new date: both will go towards the price of the tattoo.

If you need to do a last minute reschedule, we will be more than happy to accommodate, but the deposit will be forfeited.

  • One week prior to your appointment is your deadline to send all relevant information about your design! This includes any specific reference material, or relevant information about the placement.

This will be the last chance to send any changes or details before I start working on your piece! This could be an element changing, scale or placement. Any major changes to your concept will have your proposal reassessed for approval.

A few days before your appointment, I will be in touch via e-mail with a sketch or a mock-up! Mock ups will include elements of your design, reference materials I intend to use, and any specific info that will be relevant for your piece (ie, texture, placement, value).

At this point you can let me know any additional thoughts about the design and any needed adjustments can be made. Once you have approved the mock up I will create a final drawing.

Please be expecting this email - and ensure you are available for this back and forth. It will be imperative to get your approval on the mock up phase so I can begin inking and finalizing your piece.

The day of your appointment will be when you see the final inked design! All edits at this time will be based on placement and scale - and ensuring it fits perfectly on you!

  • It’s important that you feel the design is perfect for you - it's going on your body.

The mock-up is your moment to make any changes. Below are the policies for changing the design after approving a mock-up.

One drawing (sketch/mock-up and inked version) is included in your appointment.

Altering the size of the design is always free.

Minor changes may be accommodated at the artists’ discretion.

If the change requires more than one third of the drawing to be re-drawn after inking, or excessive revisions during the sketching/mock-up process, there will be an additional drawing fee.

It's important to thoroughly consider your design before beginning the design process!

  • Scars are able to be tattooed over successfully, and we are happy to do these cover-ups or adornments. Each scar has its own healing process that makes them unique in thickness and composition. Because of this, we do advise scars are more likely than non-scarred skin to require a touch-up. Touch-ups are free, but we like you to be prepared for this possibility.

Scars should be at least one year old to successfully tattoo.

If you have concerns about the age of your scar, contact a dermatologist or your tattoo artist prior to scheduling.

  • I use the highest quality available on the market.

For blacks, Dynamic. For colors, Eternal ink.

Both are vegan made with organic plant-based ingredients!

As an added plus, they are far less likely than non-vegan or chemical based inks to cause an allergic reaction.

Other brands may include animal-based glycerin, animal-based dyes, or harsh chemicals and metals.

  • Plan to be at the studio for the entire day - bring snacks, something cozy, a movie - whatever you need to feel comfortable! Also - don’t forget your current government-issue photo ID!

My new private studio is in a beautiful Greenpoint location surrounded by some of my favorite take-out spots and coffee shops in NYC, so you’ll always have the option to step out and grab something if you'd like - or you can order a meal to the studio.

We’ll spend the first hour of the day going over the design, sizing it to fit you perfectly, and making any necessary adjustments. I like to plan time into the day to really make sure everything is exactly right for you - so this can sometimes take even longer.

Then we’ll apply the final stencil and get started. You’re in charge the whole way - anytime you need a break, you have that option. Otherwise, we’ll cruise through until the piece is done - or until we hit an optimal wrapping point. I recommend breaking the tattoo sessions up to 6 hours or less of tattooing for optimal healing and experience. If your piece is going to be larger, we’ll usually be able to plan each stage strategically so your WIP still feels complete each time.

This means we’ll usually be wrapping up around 6-7pm, but I recommend keeping flexibility in your schedule. It’s best to have room to make adjustments or take breaks. If you’re traveling, please make sure your flight isn’t the same evening of the tattoo.

aftercare

  • Throughout the Healing Process:

    • Always wash your hands with liquid antibacterial soap before cleaning or touching your tattoo.

    • If possible, use freshly washed bedsheets, clothes, and towel during healing process.
Disposable paper towels are great for direct contact with the tattoo when washing or drying.

    Day 1-3:

    • Keep your bandage on for at least 2 hours. It can be left on as long as overnight.

    • When removing your bandage: first wash your hands with antibacterial soap, then rinse tattoo with warm water and pat dry with a clean paper towel. If stuck to sheets or clothing, soak the cloth to remove gently rather than ripping it off.
It will be oozy with ink and plasma - this is normal!

    • Wash twice a day with warm (not hot) water - no soap on tattoo. (Make sure to wash your hands with antibacterial soap first)
Use your hand or clean paper towel to remove any plasma that has risen to the surface.

    • Apply a very thin layer of ointment (Aquaphor or ointments made specifically for tattoos).

    • It will be normal for the tattoo to have redness, soreness, and slight heat for up to one week.
If pain, redness, or heat increases after one week instead of decreasing, reach out to your tattoo artist with a photo of the tattoo.

    Day 4-14:

    • The tattoo will begin to peel and flake, similar to a bad sunburn. This is normal!

    • Continue to wash twice a day with warm (not hot) water - no soap on tattoo - using your hand or clean paper towel to remove any scabs that are flaking off naturally. No need to scrub hard, just gentle wipes.

    • Switch to a mild unscented lotion (Lubriderm) instead of ointment.  All natural?  Try coconut oil.  Avoid lotions with fragrances.

    • Continue this as long as there is any scabbing or peeling - approximately two weeks, maybe longer.

    • IMPORTANT: Do not scratch the scabs

    • IMPORTANT: Avoid direct sun exposure (no sunscreen until the peeling is complete)

    • IMPORTANT: Absolutely no soaking - this means baths, swimming, hot tubs, etc. Showering and washing the tattoo are okay.

    • Working out: Avoid repeated stretching and compressing of the tattoo, which could cause scabs to crack.
Wash an extra time after sweating.

    Day 14-30:

    • For best healing results, continue to avoid soaking - this means baths, swimming, hot tubs, etc.

    • For best healing results, continue to avoid direct sun exposure.

    • You may now apply sunscreen, and it will always be recommended any time you will be out in the sun.

It should be completely healed in one month! Enjoy your tattoo forever!
For best results, avoid direct sun exposure (wear SPF), and keep moisturized.
